Chapter Twenty-Two

War Axe, Hangar Bay

“Dad didn’t come with you?” Cory asked as she studied her mother’s elbow where the wound should have already healed.

“He wanted to come but couldn’t. The fight is down there, and the Bad Company needs to win it.”

“They need to win every fight they’re in,” Cory replied. She held her hand close to the injury, and the space between started to glow blue. The intensity increased from Cory’s side and stopped once it reached Char’s skin. Cory concentrated and the blue glow took on its own aura, expanding and spreading. It found traction around the wound and then moved in like a door had been opened.

Char sighed, and the lines around her eyes softened and smoothed out as she relaxed with the release of pain.

The blue glow faded until it disappeared, then Cory stumbled and her chin drooped. Char caught her daughter and guided her to a chair by the Pod-docs. Using her gift tired her, but this was extreme. The effort she had expended to heal what should have been a flesh wound was immense.

“I know what it was. The Skrima rounds act as an Etheric inhibitor, even though it was a physical bullet that hit you. You continued to hurt because it was an untreated injury. You are so used to your nanos fixing everything that you don’t know what an injury feels like.” She smiled and shook her head as she started to drift. Char caught her, picked her up, and carried her like a child to her quarters.

Across the hangar bay and up the stairs, down the corridor and into Cory’s quarters. Char deposited her in bed and walked out, stopping to look at the old-style photo in a frame that stood on her daughter’s desk. “Soon, you will be avenged. We will eliminate the Skrima in this dimension,” Char whispered.

She had Smedley send a note to TH reporting her return to full health and headed to the bridge, where she found Micky pacing.

“Ship still broken?” Char asked.

“No estimate on repair time either. Ramses’ Chariot has taken up the slack. The Black Eagles are on their way back because the Skrima have disappeared.”

“That’s disconcerting.” Char closed on the tactical display, but there was nothing to see. “What about the mother of all bombs?”

“That’s the bright spot in this mess. It is close to ready, or so I’m told.”

“Anything I can do to help?”

“I don’t know what that would be unless you can fix the breakdown in attitude control. We still haven’t found the problem.”

Char scowled. “Show me the system.”

Smedley took care of it by displaying the technical drawings of the attitude control systems.

“Please highlight the junction boxes, relays, transformers, and other switching and distribution elements that are not for primary power.”

Micky stopped pacing and joined Char in looking at the main screen. “What are you looking for?”

“Call it a hunch. Why don’t you put the ship on alert?”

“That’s some hunch.” Micky returned to his captain’s chair and spun up the alarms and flashing lights.
